On a voyage from Singapore to Fu-chau he carries two hundred Chinese passengers who are returning home, along with a cargo of silver dollars. When the barometer falls, MacWhirr does not turn aside from the weather. He steers into a circular hurricane, and the crew has to survive the wind, the darkness and the chaos below decks, where scattered coins and frightened men make the ordinary business of the ship nearly impossible.
